We made it! The first big leg of our trip is done and dusted. We sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge and on to Sausalito on Thursday afternoon.
The jump from Crescent City to San Francisco was uneventful compared to the run from Neah Bay to Crescent City. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Did you hear me, Neptune? I’m not complaining. The relaxed trip was welcome. We had little to no wind so actually motored most of the way.
The trip was enjoyable. We were able to see the coastline for much of the trip. During the previous leg of the trip we were either too far out to see the coast or it was hidden in fog.
On this leg, we were visited by dolphins, cruised past sea lions, and saw several whales. The anchorage at Drakes Bay was fascinating. There was only one other boat anchored when we arrived. There were a few buildings on shore but we saw very little activity (other than an unusual number of flies.) It felt very remote though it was only 25 nm from the Golden Gate, Sausalito, and San Francisco.
Sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge was of course a highlight. When we rounded Bonita Point the bridge was shrouded in fog but we were fortunate that it lifted as we approached. As we cleared the bridge the winds rose to 20+ kts just like everyone told us they would so we had a great sail into Sausalito.
It’s the Labour Day long weekend here so the harbour is buzzing with activity. Boats are coming and going. People are swimming off their boats. SUPs and kayaks are everywhere. There is no need for TV or Netflix. Sitting in the cockpit watching all the activity is plenty of entertainment for us.
The only downside of being here is that we said goodbye to my brother, Mike, this morning. He is on his way back to Victoria as I type. We will miss him. It was great having him aboard. In fact, we’ve joked that we may have forgotten how to sail Cambria with just the two of us.
We’re not sure how long we’ll be in the San Francisco area. We’re in no rush. We won’t enter Mexico for at least six weeks so we have plenty of time to explore the area. We’re looking forward to exploring and catching up with friends who live nearby.
Just a reminder that you can find short updates of our progress on our tracking page. It’s handy because we can post to it even when we don’t have cell service.
