Prepping Cambria for Shipping

We are currently tied to a dock eight nautical miles (14km) up the Brisbane River. Cambria will be loaded on Yacht Express in a few days so we are busy getting ready for the trip. The shipping company recommends prepping the boat as if it is going on a passage so we are making sure things are lashed down and stowed securely.

We had Cambria lifted and pressure washed before the trip

Preparations are going well though the weather has been a bit of a challenge. Initially, I was concerned about rain. I worried that if it rained while we were stowing sails and gear, it would all grow mould on the three-week trip to Mexico. We’ve been lucky. Except for one thunderstorm which came at night, we haven’t had rain. So why is the weather challenging? It’s because we have had two days with temperatures over 35° C (95°F.) Thankfully, today will be cooler–only 30°C.

We are managing by getting our outside jobs done early in the morning or after the sun goes down. Not much gets done during the afternoon. Things are going well but we look forward to loading Cambria on the freighter and staying somewhere with air conditioning.

Sharlene getting the last few barnacles

Yesterday, I received an email from the owner of a catamaran that was loaded on Yacht Express in New Zealand. He commented that the day after his boat was loaded was the first time in several years he didn’t immediately check the weather after waking up in the morning. Checking the weather forecast is something I do first thing most mornings. Once Cambria leaves, I’ll try not to check the weather first thing but I expect I will. I’ll want to see the ship’s progress and the weather it is experiencing. It will be hard to let go, even if it is for just a few weeks.
