Weather has always been a big part of our planning process, but it seems even more important now. We have been watching a series of strong NW storms progress along the coast north of us. They last about six days before a brief lull of 24 to 36 hours sets in. We do not want to be pounding into 25–35 knot winds, so we wait for the lulls. We are currently in Bodega Bay, about a 60 nm sail from San Francisco. We arrived here last Friday. It looks like we might be able to move on this Thursday, but we’ll see.

We enjoyed our time in San Francisco. While there, we caught up with our cousin Eric, who joined us for dinner one night and then sailed by the next morning to say hi. We also enjoyed dinner with Jane, a high school friend of our son Brian’s. Jane now lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children. Two children! How did that happen? How did Jane get older, and I didn’t?

From San Francisco, we sailed on to Drake’s Bay, where we met up with our friends on SV Unbelievable. We first met the crew of Unbelievable in Tonga and have enjoyed crossing paths with them ever since. Like us, they shipped their boat from Australia to Mexico and are making their way north to the Pacific Northwest.

From Drake’s Bay, we made the short trip to Bodega Bay, a small fishing port. We have enjoyed watching the crab boats come and go.
Speaking of crossing paths, while here, we met up with the crew of SV Auryn. We met the Auryn family in New Zealand. They eventually sailed their boat back to Hawaii and are now living close to Bodega Bay. It was great to see them again.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this, we are keeping a close eye on the weather and hope to jump north in a couple of days.
