From Isla Isabel we moved on to the town of San Blas. Actually, we stayed just around the corner from San Blas at Mantanchen Bay. The Spanish established San Bias as a navy port for New Spain in 1768. The population grew to the point where it was three times higher than its current population.Continue reading “San Blas – Mantanchen Bay”

Isla Isabel
Isla Isabel is described as Mexico’s Galápagos Islands. I don’t know if that’s true as I’ve never been to the Galápagos, but it was amazing. The place is teaming with birds–frigates, blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, Herman’s gulls, terns and more. Additionally, there are iguanas and Mexican milk snakes. We didn’t see any snakes, but weContinue reading “Isla Isabel”
Mazatlán
We spent a couple of very enjoyable days in Mazatlán. We wandered the narrow streets of Old Mazatlán, bought our groceries at the Central Market and enjoyed some meals out. Mazatlán was well worth the visit. We hope to return someday for a longer stay.
The Pacific Coast of Baja
We have completed our trip down the west coast of the Baja Peninsula. We are now in the warm waters of the Gulf of California–The Sea of Cortez. Here are some photos from our trip down. A reminder, you can find more day-to-day accounts from our trip down the coast on our tracking page. EnsenadaContinue reading “The Pacific Coast of Baja”
Ensenda: Now What?
We have been in Ensenada, Mexico for almost two weeks now. The time has gone by quickly. As Sharlene’s previous post mentioned, we came her to check into Mexico and to enrol in Spanish lessons. We have done both those things so now the question is, how long should we stay. There are a fewContinue reading “Ensenda: Now What?”
Dolphins
In Southern California we have been fortunate to see many dolphins. Sometimes we see large groups of them at a distance. Other times a group will charge up to the boat and play at our bow or beside the boat for ten or fifteen minutes. It’s a joy to sit on the deck and watchContinue reading “Dolphins”
Catalina: Isthmus Cove and Avalon
We made it to Catalina and nothing broke along the way this time! We even sailed for several hours on our trip which we didn’t think would happen. The trip between the islands involves transiting through a US Navy practice area. The area is huge. The Navy announces over the VHF radio the coordinates ofContinue reading “Catalina: Isthmus Cove and Avalon”
Port San Luis to Santa Barbara
We spent several more days than we’d planned in Port San Luis while we waited for favourable winds and sea conditions to round Point Conception on the way to San Miguel Island. We’re glad we waited. We had comfortable conditions for our overnight sail. Comfortable conditions for an area that’s known for being quite uncomfortable.Continue reading “Port San Luis to Santa Barbara”
Monterey and Morro Bay
Since leaving Pillar Point Harbour in Half Moon Bay we have stopped in Santa Cruz, Monterey and are now in Morro Bay. Our stop in Santa Cruz was pleasant though we just dropped the hook there and didn’t actually go ashore. We used it as a quick stop so we didn’t have to do anContinue reading “Monterey and Morro Bay”
Half Moon Bay
We stopped in Pillar Point Harbour, Half Moon Bay for a couple of nights. It turned into a week. The weather extended our stay. The anchorage is well protected which is why we stayed. A low-pressure system moved through a day or two after we got there. We saw winds gusting into the mid-30s ktsContinue reading “Half Moon Bay”
