The path we chose for ourselves means that we’ve said a lot of goodbyes over the years. Living the expat life means that people are always coming and going from our lives. Of course, goodbyes can be hard but there are some upsides to this path. We tended to make friends fast. Entering a newContinue reading “Saying Goodbye”

VICE 2021
We have returned from participating in VICE 2021–Vancouver Island Cruising Experience. VICE happens most years and is run as part of the Bluewater Cruising Association of which we are members. The goal of VICE is to give would-be offshore sailors a chance to experience a multi-day offshore sail but with some other boats along forContinue reading “VICE 2021”
Vancouver and Tokyo Thoughts
We have been anchored in False Creek, Vancouver for almost a week. We’ll be here a few more days. It’s been fun using the anchorage as a base to catch up with family and friends. The ability to anchor in the heart of such an amazing city is spectacular. From our anchorage we watch runners,Continue reading “Vancouver and Tokyo Thoughts”
Highlights: Whales, Walks, Ice Cream and More
Here are some highlights from the last week or so. Waiatt Bay Waiatt Bay borders Octopus Islands Marine Park. It’s large and relatively shallow so it can accommodate many boats without feeling crowded. We stopped there twice–once on the way north and once on our way back south. One must pass through rapids to getContinue reading “Highlights: Whales, Walks, Ice Cream and More”
Rapids
I normally think of running rapids as something done in kayaks or canoes and on rivers. That’s not the case north of the Strait of Georgia. The narrow passages between islands have very strong currents running through them. Depending on the bottom topography, some of these passes actually form rapids or overfalls. Thankfully, unlike aContinue reading “Rapids”
Highlights From the Last Week (or so)
Our ability to get online has been spotty lately so here are a few recent highlights. False Bay, Lasqueti Island Upon leaving our home marina we spent two long days motoring to windward to get to Lasqueti Island. We passed many familiar landscapes to get there but False Bay on the northeast end of theContinue reading “Highlights From the Last Week (or so)”
Comox Harbour Pit Stop: Silver Lining
We had an unscheduled stop in Comox to have our raw water pump rebuilt. The pump is part of our engine’s cooling system. We noticed water dripping from it and realized it needed work. We were bummed that it happened so early in the trip but it was fortunate that we were close to Comox.Continue reading “Comox Harbour Pit Stop: Silver Lining”
Cockpit Table Rehab
Our cockpit is like our living room. We spend a lot of time in it. We use it when we’re sailing but it is also a great place to enjoy a morning coffee or an evening sunset. It’s probably the most used space on the boat. It has a small folding table that we useContinue reading “Cockpit Table Rehab”
Leaving the Dock
Our boat sails well. It’s easy to trim the sails and have it sail well. It holds a straight course. At times it feels like it could sail itself. What it’s not great at is manoeuvring in tight spaces like around docks. Generally speaking, wind and current can pin a boat to a dock makingContinue reading “Leaving the Dock”
Sails: Our New Code Zero!
This week we took possession of our new Code Zero sail from UK Sailmakers in Sidney, BC. It is our third new sail–hopefully the last one for a while. This sail brings us another step closer to realizing our dream of sailing south. If it wasn’t for Covid we’d be ready to leave in theContinue reading “Sails: Our New Code Zero!”
