Here are some highlights from the last week or so. Waiatt Bay Waiatt Bay borders Octopus Islands Marine Park. It’s large and relatively shallow so it can accommodate many boats without feeling crowded. We stopped there twice–once on the way north and once on our way back south. One must pass through rapids to getContinue reading “Highlights: Whales, Walks, Ice Cream and More”

Rapids
I normally think of running rapids as something done in kayaks or canoes and on rivers. That’s not the case north of the Strait of Georgia. The narrow passages between islands have very strong currents running through them. Depending on the bottom topography, some of these passes actually form rapids or overfalls. Thankfully, unlike aContinue reading “Rapids”
Highlights From the Last Week (or so)
Our ability to get online has been spotty lately so here are a few recent highlights. False Bay, Lasqueti Island Upon leaving our home marina we spent two long days motoring to windward to get to Lasqueti Island. We passed many familiar landscapes to get there but False Bay on the northeast end of theContinue reading “Highlights From the Last Week (or so)”
Comox Harbour Pit Stop: Silver Lining
We had an unscheduled stop in Comox to have our raw water pump rebuilt. The pump is part of our engine’s cooling system. We noticed water dripping from it and realized it needed work. We were bummed that it happened so early in the trip but it was fortunate that we were close to Comox.Continue reading “Comox Harbour Pit Stop: Silver Lining”
Leaving the Dock
Our boat sails well. It’s easy to trim the sails and have it sail well. It holds a straight course. At times it feels like it could sail itself. What it’s not great at is manoeuvring in tight spaces like around docks. Generally speaking, wind and current can pin a boat to a dock makingContinue reading “Leaving the Dock”
Sails: Our New Code Zero!
This week we took possession of our new Code Zero sail from UK Sailmakers in Sidney, BC. It is our third new sail–hopefully the last one for a while. This sail brings us another step closer to realizing our dream of sailing south. If it wasn’t for Covid we’d be ready to leave in theContinue reading “Sails: Our New Code Zero!”
Always Learning
Several years ago I saw a series of MRIs taken of people playing a video game for the first time. Their brains were lit up. The MRIs showed activity across many regions of their brains. Later, their brains were re-imaged after they had played the game multiple times. Their brains were no longer lit upContinue reading “Always Learning”
Cruising During Covid
Our home province of British Columbia has just finished its strictest restrictions so far in the fight to get Covid-19 under control. In many ways it hasn’t affected us much. The rules don’t allow for restaurants to have inside dining. Bars are closed. Travel is limited to essential travel only and only within one’s healthContinue reading “Cruising During Covid”
Vancouver Get Away
We put our to-do list on hold and got away from the dock for a few days. We have been wanting to get over to Vancouver for months–partially to do some work on the boat and partly to see our kids (while following all COVID protocols.) We planned to be there for a week. OurContinue reading “Vancouver Get Away”
New Drone
This post is a little off topic but we recently bought a drone. We’ll use it to document the places we sail. In the meantime, I used it yesterday to capture some shots around Shawnigan Lake. The canoes you see are members of the Canadian National Canoe Kayak Team. Usually their winter training camp isContinue reading “New Drone”
