We Have a Mast Again!

Last week our mast was put back in its place. It was removed in early December! At the time we didn’t imagine it would be out this long but it has had 20 years of hard labour so I guess we really shouldn’t be surprised that it needed lots of work.

When sailing, huge loads are put on the mast and rigging. Sailors refer to sailing to windward as beating into the wind. That beating is largely absorbed by the mast and rigging. They quite literally take a beating so after a time they need some TLC. That’s Blackline’s specialty and they are very thorough.

New Boom Vang!

They didn’t just replace the rigging–the cables that hold up the mast–but took every fitting and fastening apart and serviced or replaced it. It feels really good knowing we’re set up with a solid and secure rig for many years to come.

The list of things done is too long for this post–Blackline’s invoice was 15 pages long–but some of the things replaced were:

  • standing rigging and turnbuckles
  • new boom vang
  • set up boom brake
  • added jibe preventer lines to boom
  • new reefing lines
  • new jib halyard
  • replaced several lights on the mast
  • new bow sprit added
  • added dinghy engine davit

    1. Hi Bruce, Great to hear from you and thanks for your kind words. We’ve been pretty busy getting lots done so when the weather gets warmer we’ll be ready.
