Highlights From the Last Week (or so)

Our ability to get online has been spotty lately so here are a few recent highlights.

False Bay, Lasqueti Island

Upon leaving our home marina we spent two long days motoring to windward to get to Lasqueti Island. We passed many familiar landscapes to get there but False Bay on the northeast end of the island was new to us. In my mind this is where our trip started. This is where we could slow down and start exploring. Lasqueti did not disappoint. Its laid-back vibe was contagious and put us in the right mindset for the rest of our trip. The funky hotel overlooking the community dock was a great place to have a drink, enjoy the afternoon sunshine and eavesdrop on the local gossip.

Comox

Sharlene doing a little dock yoga!

We hadn’t planned to stop here but we hadn’t planned for our raw water pump to break either! The pump is part of our engine’s cooling system. We noticed water dripping from it when we were at Lasqueti and realized it needed rebuilding. It was unfortunate timing that it happened on our third day of this trip but fortunate timing that we were close to Comox. Comox was a great place to get the pump rebuilt and catch up with old friends. We found Comox very friendly. The staff at the harbour authority were particularly friendly and helpful. Also, we now know a great mechanic in Comox!

During this stopover we went kayaking on the Campbell River Estuary. This was definitely a highlight of our trip! (See Comox Valley Pit Stop for more)

Desolation Sound

There’s a reason that this is one of the west coast’s premiere cruising areas. The waters are warm and there are many well protected anchorages. The winds aren’t consistent for sailing but the many inlets are fun to explore. Highlights for us were the warm freshwater lakes. We enjoyed swims and relaxing by both Unwin Lake and Black Lake.
