Ladysmith the Sequel

We liked Ladysmith. When we left, we knew we’d be back. We just didn’t think it would be so soon.

From Ladysmith we moved on to one of our favourite anchorages, Pirate’s Cove. We spent two nights there enjoying the easy access to walking trails and getting some boat projects done while avoiding the frequent rain showers.

On the second morning I noticed a gurgling sound coming from our heating system. Upon inspection, we discovered that one of the hose connections on our new hot water tank had cracked. It had leaked six liters of coolant into the bilge.

We cleaned up the coolant and headed back to Ladysmith to get a new hose connector and a few other bits and pieces. We didn’t stay at the marina this time, instead opting to anchor behind Dunsmuir Island. Tucked in behind Dunsmuir we were protected from wind and waves but the local boom boats start work before first light and work all hours of the night which means the anchorage is not quiet. We enjoyed watching the boom boats bounce around as they worked and the noise didn’t disturb us much. From our anchorage it was a short dinghy ride into the harbour and the conveniences of Ladysmith.

It took a couple of days to get the parts and tools we needed to fix the hot water system but we got it done. As much as it was frustrating to have to repair the new hot water tank, it did mean we could enjoy some more cinnamon buns from The Old Town Bakery.

Walking up to Ladysmith’s Main Street we were surprised to find a police officer directing traffic. I hadn’t imagined Ladysmith ever needing traffic control but it did on this day. The traffic problems were the result of the sci-fi drama Resident Alien filming on the town’s Main Street. In my previous post I had mentioned that I thought Ladysmith’s Main Street is quaint. I guess the producers of Resident Alien feel the same. They want their viewers to believe it’s a quaint Main Street in Montana!

Passing the officer and turning up Main Street we walked by the cast and crew as they set up for their next shot. We were relieved to find that the bakery was two shops beyond the film crew so we were able to access the shop and more cinnamon buns.

Looking for aliens

When leaving Ladysmith, we discovered that our raw water pump was leaking again but that story will have to wait for another post.

  1. I remember that bakery and how busy it was. But the wait was worth while as the stuff they were selling was delicious. Sounds like you will never be bored with your boat. It is doing its best to make sure of that Bill M
