Any Old Port in a Storm: USB Port That Is

Whether on shore or on a boat, one can never have enough USB chargers. On Cambria we rely on USB chargers to charge our iPads, iPhones, sat phone, cameras, headlamps, flashlights… You get the idea. We rely on USB chargers a lot.

We had one auxiliary charging port down below and one in the cockpit. Even with multi-port chargers we were constantly switching devices to keep everything charged. We needed more USB charge ports.

Last week we got to work and added two double charging spots. The first one was easy. We re-purposed some wires running to an old VHF radio that we no longer used.

Installing the second port was a bit more complicated but it wasn’t too hard. It involved running some new wires, a bit of drilling and finding a switch to use for the new circuit. All those years of teaching elementary kids about circuits and batteries came in handy!

We will still have a web of cables hanging from the walls but at least they will be spread out. Hopefully they won’t be quite such a tangled mess.

  1. I am so glad you two are all safe. Hope the rest of the family is also. All four of us are all vaccinated and are safe also. What are your plans for the winter.

    1. Hi David, all is well here. Glad to hear you and the family are well. We’ll spend the winter here in Victoria. We have a few boat projects to do but other than that, no major plans.

  2. Love that you addressed this issue on your boat. We have the same issue whether it be in our home, in a hotel or our RV. Modern day problems! So glad your elementary science teaching came in handy. I really admire your problem solving! How’s your coffee brewing setup on the boat?

    1. Thanks, Larry. Regarding coffee, our set up is pretty simple—aero press and french press. Looking forward to trying some of your coffee! Now that the boarder is opening up we’ll have to plan a trip down your way.
