Too Close for Comfort

The first day of our adventure began as we left Canada and ventured across the Juan de Fuca waters to clear customs in Port Angeles. We needn’t have worried about what we would be allowed to import. All we had to do was fill out a form on line and within minutes we were allowed to enter the United States of America. Putting up the Quarantine flag was hardly worth it.

With the anchor down, we started to enjoy the rest of the day. Suddenly, Rob yelled, “There’s a ferry coming straight at us!” I was down below and thought, “Ya, right. Exaggerating again, are we Rob?” I looked out the window and sure enough there it was. I ran to the anchor ready to pull it up as Rob started the engine. Just then the ferry gave one long blast and 2 short blasts of its horn. What did THAT mean? Were we to get out of the way somehow? Just as we were ready to abandon ship, he started his turn and away he went. I’m sure the captain enjoyed watching us scramble on deck. I think there should be a big sign saying, “Beware! Big ferry will look like it’s going to hit your boat. Don’t be alarmed. It will turn just before it does. Have a nice stay.”

  1. So maybe the Captain was just having a little fun at your expense? A boat the size of the Coho could look pretty intimidating .
