Local Wildlife

Musings by Shar.

We are in Half Moon Bay for a few days and there is a great presence of 2 types of wildlife around us. Unfortunately, it has caused us some frustration.

Pelicans are in abundance here, but it means they cover the breakwater with their…well…their…poop. This then draws the attention of flies which are also in abundance. There is nothing I can do for the pelican problem short of scrubbing the breakwater wall (which I might do if we stay here much longer), but there might be something I can do to rid our cockpit of the flies. (Fortunately, they don’t seem to like being down below.)

After extensive research on the best bait for flies, I discovered raw (the older the better) meat is best. So, I have made a few traps and set them around the cockpit. However, not only do we have the stench of pelican poop, but we will soon have the stench of rotting meat to rid ourselves of the relentless flies. So, which is worse? Flies, rancid smell of meat, or pelican poop? We are stuck with two of the three.

  1. I plan to try this in Minnesota next summer…. supposedly 50/50 pine sol and water mix in a spray bottle and spray and wipe on tables, furniture, surfaces, will keep flies away. Pelicans are fun to watch, but not too close!

    1. We will have to give this a try. I am sitting down below as I write. Sharlene is up in the cockpit and I can hear her swatting flies.
