The Wonders of Variety

One of my favourite food groups is fruit. Having lived in a few and visited other countries around the world, I thought I was pretty well versed in the many varieties of fruit that are out there. Well, I am still discovering new ones.

A stop at a local food stand presented us with the opportunity to add 2 more types of fruit to our taste repertoire. I’m not sure I’m a fan of either, but it was interesting to try them.

 Caimito, or star apple, has a purple skin and segments like a Christmas orange. It reminds me of a cross between a mangosteen and a lychee but slimier.

Abiu has a creamy/jelly like consistency with white/translucent fruit. According to google, it should taste like a sweet caramel custard. Hmmm…

  2. ALWAYS A CHALLENGE TO EXERCISE THE TASTE BUDS (pardon the capitalization) Actually it is our nose that gives us most of our taste I am told. The taste buds can detect sweet and sour and one other thing I can’t remember) but the nose can detect hundreds of different odors .

  3. Fruit is also my favourite food group, so I too look forward to discovering new varieties. Rambutan was one that I enjoyed a lot in Costa Rica, along with fresh papaya, which is so good when fresh, unlike the bland stuff we get at home.
    These two sound very interesting; too bad they didn’t quite deliver.
