We took part in the Vava’u Blue Water Festival two weeks ago. It was a busy week though we don’t have a lot of photos to show for it. There were several seminars with information about sailing to and around New Zealand. Also, there were a couple of fun races. Until coming to Tonga I had never been in a sailing race so it was a new experience for me and I really enjoyed it. One day we were bussed to a local beach for a Tongan feast and some traditional games like spear throwing.

For the meal pigs were cooked slowly over a fire. More food was cooked in an umu. To make an umu a pit is dug in the ground. A fire is set in the pit. Rocks are placed in the fire. When the rocks are hot and the fire has died down, food in foil packets is placed on the rocks and covered with large green leaves, heavy blankets and soil. The food is left for an hour or two to cook. When cooked, everything is dug up and served. It was delicious!

Looks like a fun day. Would not want to be too close to the spear throwing
We had a great Thanksgiving week end. Sunny and 22 degrees on Saturday and Sunday and not quite so nice on Monday. Today it is raining off and on. The surveyor was here this morning to find the lot markings and now Mike and Chris are using the extra long ladder they just rented putting plastics over the boards that were exposed once the decks were removed, Scary! Chris is a long way up with Mike holding the long ladder steady.
Second is pretty good. Were you on someone else’s boat?
