We spent the last few weeks back on the boat–and I’m surprised. Surprised that I wanted to be back on the boat.

When we returned to Canada after nearly three years of cruising, I thought I’d be done with it for a while–not forever, but at least for the summer. We had other plans, and we followed through. We spent time reestablishing our lives in Canada, enjoyed the family home at Shawnigan, and of course, time with our kids and new grandson. But it wasn’t long before I found myself thinking about sailing and exploring again.

We had a wedding to attend on Quadra Island, so we took a few extra weeks to sail there, revisiting some of our favourite spots along the way. I loved it. We had the best whale-watching experience we’ve ever had, drifting in Malaspina Strait while watching a lone humpback. Harbour porpoises swam near the boat each morning while we were anchored in Gowland Harbour. Countless seals passed by to check us out. And beyond the wildlife encounters, we enjoyed several freshwater swims in the lakes around Desolation Sound.

I’m enjoying being home and the conveniences it offers–like near-endless hot water–but I’m already looking forward to more sailing and exploring along BC’s coast. I’m excited to get back out there and see what’s around the next corner.
Here are a few photos from the trip.

Your photos are magnificent and remind us of many of our favorite spots in the Salish. Wow, you captured the humpback at its best. We’re in Holland, enjoying being new grandparents. Our plan is to return to V Island, late October and then a short turnaround before heading to PV to see our “WhaleSong”

Hi Scott,
Good to hear from you and thanks. I’m envious that you’re in Holland. Also, being a grandparent is pretty awesome isn’t it!
It would be great to meet up for coffee or lunch when you get back. Shoot us an email if you’ll have the time.
